My Nerves Were On Edge :)

“I hit the button and watched the screen…”

Controversy  can be highly effective. It works because it creates a
reaction which the receiver is not used to feeling. However, its
use should be highly controlled.

And here is one reason why:

I recently saw a thread on a forum saying that a member had died.
He had not, but the poster wanted as many people to read the thread
as possible. He was trying to take advantage of the ’shock’ factor.

Was that an effective form of marketing? Probably not. He did  have
a lot of views of his thread. He also did cause a heated discussion
about his title.

However, because the title had no relevance to the thread, the
thread did not generate the type of response which he craved. In my
opinion this was a rather sick tactic to try.

Do you want to know the three subjects which always get me to open
the email?

1. Notification of Payment Received
2. You Have Referred a Sale
3. [Personal] To Ben

It is not hard to see why.

However, if the email is not 100% relevant to the subject line then
it will work against the emailer. I will lose trust in the sender
and probably not respond to any further emails.

On Friday I was being rather experimental in my email. Not with the
subject, or even with the style. However, the content had a very
tenuous connection to the Adult Industry and I was unsure of the
reception that it would receive.

If you have met me in person at a conference or at one of my
training workshops then you will understand the irony in me
promoting the adult industry or anyone involved in it even in a
minimal way. It just point-blank wouldn’t happen because my morals
strongly disagree with it.

However, I do recognize that there are techniques being used which
could easily be carried over to mainstream marketing and be used
effectively with:

- Adsense
- Affiliate Promotions
- Website Design
- Product Creation

just to name a few.

The reason is because in many ways, they are years ahead of us in
the techniques that they use. Whether moral or not, there is a huge
market for adult material on the internet that has fed the
investment by marketers into new and innovative techniques.

A true story as an aside:

A few months after I married my wife Gina (with a hard G), my
father-in-law sat me down and I could see that he was perplexed. He
explained that he thought that I built websites for a living, but
Gina had told him that infact I market products online. His face
was very tense, so I explained in simple words exactly what I do on
a daily basis. How I research different niches, consult, copywrite
and about 100 different other tasks. I could see the relief on his
face as he explained to me with a smile how he had been worried how
to explain to his friends that I was involved in the adult industry.

Anyways, back to the point…

The feedback on the email that I sent out on Friday was actually
very positive. After all, who doesn’t like a free report with
quality content contained within?

My own nerves were eased especially when I received a number of
emails asking me for more information about the tactics contained
within.

PS. On a related note, Woody Maxim has just finished writing his
monthly print newsletter. If you subscribe within the next few days then
you will have access to the May edition. Otherwise you will have to
wait until June. This month he has included both a basic and also
an advanced step-by-step plan of action. Great stuff!
